Information for Instructors
Disability Accommodated Exams
- Students with exam accommodations are registered through the Student Access Center (SAC).
- Exam registrations are created by the student through Access Online.
- Visit the Instructor Portal to view student accommodation requests and upload exam files.
- For a more detailed breakdown of the accommodated exam process, see the information below.
- Students seeking accommodations must complete two steps to initiate the test request process:
- Request accommodations in each class via Access Online and discuss the implementation of those accommodations with their instructor. If the instructor directs the student to set up the exam with the University Testing Center (UTC), student will need to make a request.
- Submit exams requests via the Access Online portal with at least five (5) business days’ notice.* Once they have done so, the instructor will be contacted by the UTC.
- If a student fails to provide our office with proper notice of an exam, we cannot guarantee a seat in our Testing Center.
- Students must schedule the exam for the same day and time as the exam occurs in the classroom.
- If this causes a time conflict with another class(es) or with UTC business hours, the student should work with the instructor and the UTC to have an alternate time approved.
- Instructors must submit an Instructor Testing Agreement to the UTC before we can administer an exam on their behalf.
- A link to this form will be included in the accommodation letter of each student who requests testing accommodations for a particular class and section.
- Once the form is filled out, the link will stop appearing in subsequent request letters as it is automatically copied to all other students in the same section.
- The Instructor Testing Agreement communicates to UTC the following information:
- Instructions for and format of the exam and approved aids (calculator, dictionary, notes, etc.)
- How the proctor can contact the instructor with a student question during the exam
- Preferred return method for completed exams
- Note that some exam preferences may not be possible in the Testing Center such as oral or listening portions of exams, timing of slide shows, etc.
- Changes to the preferences and instructions for proctoring exams after the Instructor Testing Agreement has been submitted should be communicated to the Testing Center at KUTesting@ku.edu
- Two to three business days before the exam, you will receive a confirmation via email from the University Testing Center, requesting that you provide a copy of the exam (and any supporting materials, such as tables, charts, formulas sheets, etc.).
- Exams and supporting materials can be
- uploaded to the link included in the email
- emailed to KUtesting@ku.edu
- dropped off in-person to the Testing Center check-in room at 206 Price Computing Center.
- Exams should NEVER be sent via campus mail.
* Accommodations for final exams must be scheduled by twelve (12) business days before the last day of classes, and all exam conflicts must be worked out by then. Please double-check the KU final exam schedule before posting the date and time. Our office adheres strictly to the registrar-scheduled start times, and incorrect information can cause major problems in scheduling accommodations for final exams.
- Students will be supervised by UTC Staff. Faculty-provided instructions will be closely adhered to and time limits strictly enforced.
- It is the instructor’s responsibility to communicate to the UTC any changes or corrections made to the exam after the beginning of the regularly scheduled exam.
- Faculty are always welcome to visit the Testing Center to check in with students or deliver additional information during exams but should be aware that other exams may be in progress during that time.
- Instructors may collect completed exams from our Testing Center at 206 Price Computing Center after they are complete, or UTC staff can scan and return your exam electronically. Please allow up to 24 hours for exam return.
- Exams will be returned as soon as possible but depending on the volume of exams on a given day may be slightly delayed. All exams are returned as quickly as possible, but please allow up to 24 hours for return.
- We DO NOT deliver exams via campus or federal mail. If you have questions about alternative methods of delivery, please contact the UTC at KUtesting@ku.edu.
Make-Up Exams
The University Testing Center is available for make-up exams for all students on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays from 8 AM to 5 PM. The exam registration process for make-up exams is different than from accommodated exams. In order for us to give an exam, the instructor must first register the exam through RegisterBlast. An exam must be registered with us at least 72 hours in advance of exam time. See the information below for instructions on how to register for an exam and video tutorials for RegisterBlast.
Final exam make-ups will be held from 9am-5pm on Monday, May 18 and Tuesday, May 19. No make-up exams will be held during finals week.
Activating RegisterBlast in Canvas
In order for your students to use the University Testing Center, you must first activate the RegisterBlast link on your course's Canvas page. Students will be unable to register for exams if you do not complete this step.
- Click on the "Settings" link in your course's navigation list.
- Click on the "Navigation" tab at the top of the screen.
- Scroll down until you find the "University Testing Center" item. It is disabled by default and likely will be at the bottom of the page.
- Click the three dots to the right of "University Testing Center" and select "Enable."
- The "University Testing Center" link will now be active in your Canvas navigation. Don't forget to ensure that it is visible to students, as well.
Registering an Exam
- Click the “University Testing Center” link in your course’s Canvas page.
- Press the blue plus sign button on the top right of the page.
- Fill out the exam information, including what day and time. You can enter a range of dates if you would like to allow your students flexibility in scheduling.
- Upload a file: this is where you send us the exam so that we can print it for the students. It’s easiest if you do this during the initial registration, but you can also upload the file at a later date.
- Answer the “additional information” questions so that we know how to prepare your exam.
- Set student eligibility: type in the name or email of the students who are taking the exam with us.
- Click submit!
- To add files at a later date or edit your registration, click on the three dots to the left of the submission name and click “Edit.”
- For future exam registrations, you can use the “Clone” function to duplicate your answers to our questions and speed up the registration process.
Late Exam Registrations
Exams are processed at the University Test Center on a first-come, first-served basis. We cannot guarantee a spot in the UTC for exams submitted after the 72-hour deadline.
Exam Return
When you register an exam, you will choose how you would like the exam to be returned to you. You can receive the exams via email or choose to pick them up in person at the UTC. Additionally, we can upload the exams to RegisterBlast. See the video below for information about how to access finished exams on RegisterBlast.
